Roof Damage After Severe Weather
On the evening of February 19, 2026, the National Weather Service recorded what it lists as the Bloomington Tornado. A 70 mph thunderstorm gust was measured at Monroe County Airport, and hail was reported just southeast of the city. Indiana Public Media later reported an EF2 rating, peak winds near 120 mph and a track of about 3.7 miles across the west side.
A second tornado, still preliminary, was posted for Monroe County on June 17–18, 2026; the Weather Service noted wind damage to the east of Stinesville and downed trees in Ellettsville. Winter brings its own risks: the stretch to Bloomington was among the hardest hit in the February 2007 ice storm, with half an inch to an inch of ice. The June 29, 2012 derecho, with gusts near 80 mph, was a regional event across Indiana rather than a local one.

The Usual Scenarios
- Lifted or missing shingles. Strong gusts can break a shingle's seal and fold it back or tear it off. A tab that settles flat may still leak.
- Hail marks. Hail can knock granules loose, bruise shingles and dent gutters, vents and trim.
- Limbs on the roof. On wooded lots, a falling branch can crack shingles or punch into the deck.
- Ice and heavy snow. Ice along the eaves can push water under shingles, and wet snow adds weight.
- A new stain inside. A fresh ceiling spot after a storm deserves a closer look.
Before anyone climbs a ladder, take your own pictures from the ground: each side of the roof, gutters, downspouts, screens, siding, anything outdoors hail may have dented, and any ceiling stains. Note the storm's date too.

What Happens on the Day
- You fill in the form with a note about the storm and what you've noticed.
- One independent local roofer gets in touch to set a time.
- The roofer checks shingles, flashing, vents, gutters and the attic, and takes photos.
- You hear the findings, including any wear that looks like age rather than storm damage.
- You get the roofer's written estimate and decide in your own time.

What Sets This Apart
- You make the first move. You reach out when it suits you, not after a knock at the door.
- One roofer, not a crowd. Your request goes to a single independent roofer, not a string of sales pitches.
- Nothing owed to this site. A fee for each request comes from the roofer who receives it. You pay nothing and receive nothing.
- A go-between, not a contractor. The roofer, not this site, prices the job, writes the contract and does the work.
Claims Without the Confusion
If you decide to file a claim, settling it is up to you and your insurance company. A roofer can point out the damage, photograph it and write an estimate for the repair or replacement. The roofer does not handle the claim. Indiana's rules on home improvement contracts are summed up on the Indiana roofing rules page.

Frequently Asked
How can I tell whether hail reached my roof?
Start on the ground. Fresh dents in gutters, downspouts, vent caps or a grill lid can hint that hail fell hard enough to matter, and granules piling up at downspout outlets are another clue. None of that proves the roof was damaged, so a roofer's close look settles it.
A roofer showed up at my door after the storm. What now?
Take your time. Inside city limits, anyone selling door to door needs a Solicitor License from the City of Bloomington, and asking to see it is fair. If you sign a deal of $25 or more at your own home, Indiana law lets you cancel it up to the end of the third business day after the sale.
Does a storm-damaged roof always need replacing?
No. A few torn shingles or a bent piece of flashing can often be fixed on their own. Replacement tends to come up when damage covers much of the roof or the roof was already near the end of its life. Ask the roofer to explain which they recommend and why.
Should I get on the roof myself to look?
It's safer not to. Wet or damaged shingles are slippery, and a loose tab or soft spot can give way underfoot. Ground-level photos and a look in the attic with a flashlight tell you a lot, and the climbing can wait for the roofer, who has the ladder and the gear.
